Cruising

KYC Cruising Fleet
Fleet Co-captains: Jim Cannon and Sue Baker
KYC Board Representative: Peter Fedora

Cruise: to sail or travel about, as for pleasure or reconnaissance; to move leisurely about an area in hope of discovering something.

You can read about the 2008 Cruising Fleet sojourns in the LOG.

KYC Cruising Fleet Program – 2009

The 2009 Cruising calendar is structured around four types of events:

1. A series of Monday evening sails
2. A series of Sunday day sails
3. Four weekend rendezvous
4. An extended cruise

All KYC members, whether boat owners or not, are welcome to participate in cruising events. One purpose of cruising events is to encourage boat owners and no-boaters to connect and go sailing. The Monday evening and Sunday sails offer opportunities to achieve this goal.

All weekend rendezvous destinations are accessible by road as well as by water. In past seasons, participants have been innovative in using a variety of combinations of land and water travel to attend events.

The extended cruise scheduled for mid-July will visit a series of anchorages and marinas on the south shore of Lake Ontario.

Cruisers are also reminded about the Fort Frontenac Cruising Cup (FFCC). To meet the requirements for an award, cruisers must sail to a set of places in Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River. The FFCC Log, which can be picked up at the KYC office or bar, lists the requirements which need to be completed to earn an award.

Information updates and reminders about cruising events are distributed by e-mail as the season progresses. If you are not currently receiving cruising fleet notices and would like to, send an e-mail to cannonj@queensu.ca asking to be added to the list. Information about events is also posted on the Cruisers Notice Board in the Sunshine Room (west end of the main floor behind the fireplace) throughout the season.

If you plan to attend an event, please reply to e-mail notices or use the sign-up sheets on the Cruiser’s Notice Board so that the event coordinator will know how many to expect.

Saturday will feature a pre-dinner Happy Hour (bring your own drinks, each boat is to bring an hors d’oeuvre to share with the group) followed by a do it yourself BBQ. Bring food to prepare your dinner using the BBQ’s available on the Trident patio and an evening of sailors’ trivia complete with prizes will be fun for all. Remember to sign up on the Cruising Notice Board so we can tell Trident how many to expect.

KYC Cruising Fleet Sunday Sail

Sunday August 9th invitation to Judith and Robert Mackenzie's place.
Judith and Robert Mackenzie have invited the Cruising Fleet to their place on Amherst Island on Sunday August 9th. The plan is to raft at their mooring ball or anchor nearby and to have lunch ashore before heading back to KYC in the late afternoon. If you have a dinghy it would be helpful in ferrying people ashore.

If you moor your boat at KYC, plan to meet at 10:00 and get underway around 10:15.

No Boaters who would like to sail are asked to sign the August 9th Sunday Sail list posted on the Cruisers Bulletin Board at KYC or to contact Jim Cannon by Thursday August 6. Boat assignments will be made at KYC when we gather at 10:00 on Sunday morning.

Monitor Channel 71 while en route.

For additional information please contact Judith or Robert Mackenzie (mackenziejr@sympatico.ca or 613 548-8332).

How to Get There (By Boat or by Car)

By Boat Chart

The Mackenzie's place is on the north shore of Amherst Island located on the North Channel west of The Brothers Islands and east of Preston Cove which is located just east of Griffin Point (see attached chart). This notice and the chart are also posted on the KYC web site and on the Cruiser’s Bulletin Board

With reference to the chart, proceed west past The Brothers Islands to the point marked "X" on the chart. The point “X” will be marked by a floating object anchored on station.

When proceeding to Point "X" stay off the Amherst Island shore by keeping the entire Lennox power plant (not just the two stacks) in sight. The sight line is shown on the chart. Scattered boulders are located in the water inside the Lennox power plant sight line towards Amherst Island .

Point "X" lies just west of County Road 6 as extended southward across the North Channel. The location of Point "X" is at the intersection of the Lennox power plant sight line and a range located in front of the Mackenzie's house which is yellow with a brown steel roof. The range is marked with two red triangles. Binoculars are required to see the two red triangles from point "X". The steel chimney on the roof of the house also lines up with the range formed by the two red triangles.

Proceed from the floating mark at point X towards the shore on the range. There is generally 8' of water on the range but it is essential to keep dead on the range and not to wander off by more than 10 feet to avoid a few scattered large boulders. Keep watch and proceed slowly. Caper which draws 5' 8" will be on the mooring ready to receive your raft. There is 10' of water at the mooring.

Monitor Channel 71 on your approach.

By Car

For those who come by vehicle, the Amherst Island ferry departs from Millhaven on the half hour. Departures from the Island are on the hour. $8 return for a vehicle. People free. On arrival on the island proceed straight ahead to the fourway stop intersection and turn left onto Front Road. Proceed through the hamlet of Stella and go for a distance of about 4 km. The Mackenzie's are at 1150 Front Road.

We look forward to seeing you

Robert and Judith Mackenzie

August 21-23 – Picton Jazz Festival Cruise
Jazz and other attractions in Picton and Prince Edward County are the focus for this weekend rendezvous (see www.pecjazz.org). Watch for an announcement in late May about procuring tickets for a Saturday afternoon wine tour and the stage show at the Regent Theatre. Mooring can be arranged at the town docks or local marinas.

Labour Day Weekend – Sept 5th to 7th– Waupoos
Waupoos offers either anchoring in the bay or docking at the marina. The marina offers coffee and muffins in the AM. Sunday evening will feature a catered BBQ and live music. The event is held jointly with CBYC cruisers.

September 13th Sunday Sail
Meet at KYC for a 10:30 departure
