Cruising

Fleet Co-Captains – Jim Cannon,
Sue Baker
Definitions:
Cruise: To sail or travel about, as for pleasure or reconnaissance.
Informal: To move leisurely about an area in hope of discovering
something
In 2008, the Cruising calendar is structured around four
types of events:
1. A series of Monday evening sails
2. A series of Sunday day sails
3. Four weekend rendezvous
4. An extended cruise
All KYC members, whether boat owners or not, are welcome
to participate in cruising events. One purpose of cruising
events is to help boaters meet boaters. The Monday evening
and Sunday sails offer opportunities to achieve this goal.
A Cruising Crew Bank is being created (see www.kyccrewbank.com)
to help Skippers and No Boaters connect and go afloat.
All weekend rendezvous destinations are accessible by road
as well as by water. In past seasons, participants have been
innovative in using a variety of combinations of land and
water travel to attend events.
The extended cruise scheduled for mid-July will visit a series
of anchorages and marinas to the east.
Cruisers are also reminded about the Fort Frontenac Cruising
Cup (FFCC). To meet the requirements for an award, cruisers
must sail to a set of places in Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence
River. The FFCC Log, which can be picked up at the KYC bar,
lists the requirements which need to be completed to earn
an award.
Information updates and reminders about cruising events are
distributed by e-mail as the season progresses. If you are
not currently receiving cruising fleet notices and would like
to, please send your e-mail address to cannonj@queensu.ca.
Information about events is also posted on the Cruising Notice
Board in the Old Board Room (west end of the main floor behind
the fireplace) throughout the season.
Please reply to e-mail notices or use the sign-up sheet on
the Cruisers Notice Board if you plan to attend an event so
that the host for the event will know how many to expect.

May 24th Don’t Rock The Boat
Collins Bay Marina will host a safe boating event for the
public on Saturday 24 May from noon to 4 PM. Admission is
free. Many agencies plan to participate including the Coast
Guard (with Cape Hearn and a rescue helicopter), Kingston
Fire and Rescue (with a fire truck and fire boat), HMCS Cataraqui
(a recruiting display and divers), CORK (boat
rides), Frontenac Outfitters (kayak self rescue and how to
put on a PFD in the water), Kingston Yacht Club (radio controlled
boats), and a childrens entertainer (Mary Lambert).
June 2nd Monday Evening Sail
The first of a series of weekly sails Mondays at 5:30 throughout
June, July and August.
June 8th Sunday Cruise
The Cruisers first Sunday sail takes place on June 8th with
Jim and Anne Beatson acting as tour directors.
The destination (winds and weather willing) is to be Stella
Bay at Amherst Island. There is a dock at Stella Bay with
dinghy access and potential for a few boats to tie up to the
dock while others can raft up at anchor. There is a General
Store near the dock on Amherst Island but we suggest everyone
bring a light lunch. If some wish to drive, the ferry from
the mainland to Amherst Island runs every half hour.
We propose meeting at the yacht club at 9.30am for a skippers
meeting prior to departure at 10 am.
Members with a boat who wish to take part and members without
a boat who also wish to participate are invited to list their
names and telephone numbers on separate sheets on the cruiser’s
bulletin board in the Sunshine Lounge at KYC. Hopefully the
two groups can successfully link up to join the cruise.
On return to KYC, a special prize will be awarded. Don’t
miss out!
So, grab the kids, grandkids, and fellow sailors and join
the flotilla!
Events are also scheduled for June 29, July 20, August 10,
August 24, September 7 and September 14 (See calendar above).
June 14th – Sailpast and BBQ
(Day Event)
Make a point to join the fleet for Sailpast and consider inviting
non-boat owners aboard for an afternoon on the water. The
entertainment and BBQ after Sailpast provide a great opportunity
to mingle with KYC members.
June 16th Cruising Fleet Extended
Cruise Information Session
This season’s Cruising Fleet program includes an extended
cruise. There will be a meeting on Monday June 16 at 7:30
in the Partridge Room to provide information about this event.
The full cruise runs from July 5 to 16. However, even if you
can’t participate in the entire cruise, you may still
be interested in joining the group by car or by boat for particular
components.
John Mason, the event coordinator, will lead an information
session to present route notes, a cruise schedule to meet
activity options, and slides showing chartlets, route overviews,
anchoring options and destination photos which he will use
to give a detailed overview of the cruise plan.
Optional activities include two theatre stops (“Les
Miserables” at Gananoque and “As You Like It”
at the St. Lawrence Shakespeare Festival in Prescott), a Lobster
Fest with entertainment at Ivy Lea, and visits to the Frederic
Remington Museum in Ogdensburg and Singer Castle on Dark Island.
The latter two locations require visitors to have an I-68.
Some of these activities require pre-booking to obtain ticket
discounts and guaranteed entry. A sign-up sheet will be circulated
at the meeting to facilitate the pre-booking process.
Those attending may want to bring charts 1435, 1436, 1437
and 1438, as well as Ports Cruising Guide for our area. All
who are interested in participating in all or some parts of
the cruise are urged to attend the information session.
See you on Monday evening. It should fun as well as informative.
June 20 – TGIF at Trident Yacht
Club
The first weekend rendezvous of the season is to Trident Yacht
Club in the Bateau Channel on the way to Gananoque. Come by
boat or car to join the festivities
Friday June 20 - TGIF from 5:30 to 7:30. Trident is a short
15 minute drive east of the Cataraqui causeway. Watch for
the Trident sign on the south side of Highway #2. If you wish
to sail in on Friday you must contact Liz Lazier, Trident
manager, to confirm that docking space will be available.
(trident@kos.net or 613-382-2771)
Saturday June 21 and Sunday June 22 – Trident sailors
are off to Kingston for their Pursuit Race and Liz will have
space for KYC boats on Saturday night. However we need to
provide her with advance information about the number and
size of boats that will be coming.
If you plan to attend (or think you might attend), please
reply to Kathleen and Peter Girard, event co-ordinators, at
kpgirard@cogeco.ca
(boat name, length, draft, total number attending) or write
your name and boat information on the Trident Rendezvous sign-up
sheet on the Cruisers Bulletin Board in the Sunshine Lounge/Old
Board Room by Wednesday June 18 so that Liz will know how
many KYC boats to expect.
The KYC Cruising Committee will provide nibbly stuff for
a happy hour (4:30PM Saturday afternoon). You will need to
supply your own beverages and the food to BBQ for your dinner.
Directions To Trident Yacht Club:
By Car – From Highway 2 and Joyceville road proceed
east for about 5 km. on Highway 2 to Trident Yacht Club lane.
Watch for Trident YC sign on the south side of Highway 2.
By Water – TYC is on the north side of the Bateau channel
of the St. Lawrence River about two-thirds of the way from
Kingston to Gananoque. N44*18.2’ W76*15.5’
June 21th– 22th – Trident
Yacht Club Rendezvous
The first weekend rendezvous of the season is to Trident Yacht
Club. Enjoy a more lengthy cruise around the east end of Howe
Island and back east along the Bateaux Channel or sail directly
to TYC via the eastern entrance to the Bateaux Channel. Saturday
will feature a pre-dinner reception (bring your own drinks,
nibbles provided) and bring your own BBQ dinner. (BBQ’s
are available on site.) Remember to sign up on the Cruising
Notice Board so we can tell Trident how many to expect.
July 5th -16th - EYC Escape Cruise East
This 10 day cruise will explore anchorages and marinas east
along the St. Lawrence. Stops will include a lobster fest
with entertainment, two plays, a barbeque in the islands,
a visit to the Frederic Remington Museum (Ogdensburg), and
a tour of historic Singer Castle.
July 18th and 19th Main Duck Race
One option to meet the requirements of the Fort Frontenac
Cruising Cup is to complete an overnight passage. The Main
Duck Race offers an opportunity to meet this challenge under
conditions monitored by KYC. See the Schedule of Racing Events
for details.
July 26th and 27th – Partridge
Bowl with an Overnight and Sunday Brunch
The “race” from KYC to Jemmett’s Landing
is one of the most popular events of the sailing season. At
the end of the day enjoy a BBQ and evening bonfire. The next
morning Sunday Brunch is served on the property before heading
home. Hope to see you there.
Aug 14th – 17th – Picton
Jazz Festival Cruise
The destination is Prince Edward County Yacht Club with docking
or rafting (there are other marinas close by). An informal
gathering with good food and music.
Labour Day Weekend – Aug 30th
– Sept 1st– Waupoos
Waupoos offers either anchoring in the bay or docking at the
marina. The marina offers coffee and muffins in the AM and
will facilitate group BBQ’s. Cruisers from CBYC are
expected to join us as they attempt to defend the Challenge
Cup in a race back to Kingston at the end of the weekend.
Awards
Fort Frontenac Cruising Cup

specified in the Fort Frontenac Cruising Cup LOG. Copies of
the LOG are available from the Office or at the bar.

Fleet annual dinner.
