Adult Learn to Sail
Membership Program 2010

Introduction
To participate in Adult LTS, you must first become an Associate, Senior, Single or Family member of KYC. For further details on membership categories and other club activities please visit http://kingstonyachtclub.com/membership/categories.cfm.
The Adult Learn to Sail course includes eight “On the water” lessons at Level One or Level Two. The cost in addition to the membership you select will be $250 for the first 8 lessons (this includes the CYA book "Basic Cruising Skills"). Additional sets of lessons (depending on availability) may be taken for $220.
Course Descriptions
The courses are taught on board one of the club owned "Sharks" by volunteer club members who have a broad range of experience, from world cruising to world championship racing. Lessons are on the water, Mondays and Wednesdays, from 5:30pm to 8:30pm, with contingency for foul weather. Participants must provide their own Personal Flotation Device (PFD) or Life Jacket approved by the Ministry of Transportation and wear soft (non marking) soled shoes that have a good grip.
Level One
The level one course is designed for individuals who have never sailed or have limited sailing experience. An instructor will be on board each boat to teach fundamental sailing skills. There are no more than three students per boat. Students will learn tacking, gybing, and sailing on all points of sail with appropriate sail trim. Students will alternate between crewing and helming to gain experience in all tasks. The course will also cover basic terminology, safety, rules of the road, weather, crew overboard recovery, and other basic seamanship.
Level Two
Level one or the equivalent sailing knowledge and experience is the prerequisite for Level Two. Students must possess basic sailing skills for this course as they will sail the boats without an instructor on board. The instructor will coach from a nearby powerboat. Students will learn how to handle a spinnaker and improve their basic sailing skills. The level two course is a great confidence builder in boat handling.
Both Level One & Level Two are based upon the Canadian Yachting Association Basic Cruising Standard.
Community Club
Qualified sailors, subject to evaluation, may then choose to participate in the KYC Community Club program. Upgrading to a Single or Family membership is required. The Community Club program allows members access to the KYC fleet of seven “Shark” class boats on a reserve basis whenever the boats are not in use for lessons (excluding overnight and after dusk). These are the same 24 ft keelboats on which lessons are given.
Crew Bank
All KYC members are encouraged to register with the KYC Crew Bank if interested in racing Tuesdays and Thursdays. Click here for the Racing Page
