Paper Chase
Brichwood Ale 5.6% ABV
Paper Chase is a certified organic copper-coloured ale, brewed with locally foraged birch bark and aged on roasted Canadian birchwood. Just-lit campfires, caramel and tea-like tannins intermingle in this decidedly delicious (and deciduous) ale. It’s part of Beau’s Wild Oats Series of innovative beer recipes that offer bold flavours and new adventures for the craft beer drinker.
History and Style
We’ve taken Canadian birch and its strong-yet-pliable bark beyond the iconic canoe with the creation of Paper Chase. Working with birch in two ways brings out complexity of aroma and flavour. The birch bark is hand-harvested and used as an ingredient, and then the beer ages for a time on roasted birchwood. On the label, two paper airplanes chase each other in a mid-century modern graphic style.
Tasting Notes
Paper Chase pours copper with a light haze and white foam. The aroma consists of caramel, dried fruit and baking spice. The birch asserts itself in the flavour offering firm tannins and impressions of sandalwood. The finish is long with lingering caramel sweetness.

| Sail Canada Sailor of the Month
Ready and determined, Laser, Laser Radial, and Laser 4.7 sailors gathered in Fort Lauderdale for their first event of 2019. The Lauderdale Yacht Club in January attracted over 55 Laser sailors, battling it out over 10 races at the Lauderdale OCR event, which also served as the Canadian Pan Am qualifier in the Laser and Laser Radial classes.
The four-day event brought in a variety of conditions, from breezy and wavy to light and shifty. Attracting many of the Canadian Sailing Team & Development Squad members, Robert Davis and Fillah Karim stayed on top of each other throughout the week fighting to finish at the top of the Laser fleet.
The last day of the event brought high-pressure racing as Fillah and Robert started the day only one point apart, sitting in 3rd and 4th respectively. Posting a 4-8, Davis switched places with Fillah to secure the spot as top Canadian, qualifying him a position at the 2019 Pan Am Games in Lima, Peru.
“I am super excited to represent Canada this summer at the Pan American Games,” said Davis. “Qualifying for this event has been a long-term goal of mine, and attending will allow me the opportunity to qualify Canada for the 2020 Olympic Games.”
Reaching his personal best, Fillah sailed a great event and really kept to the top of the fleet throughout the entire week. “Fillah has raised his level tremendously over the last year, it’s great to see other Canadian sailors pushing towards the top of the fleet, ultimately raising the level of our team,” said Davis.

The 2019 Sailors Handbook is now available online via the "Sailing / Sailors Handbook" menu item on our KYC website. Please have a look at the information on our various programs for the coming year, noting key event dates for planning purposes. For keelboat racing, there are no significant changes to our Sailing Instructions for the year. Again this year, all boats with PHRF rating 165 and lower will be racing in the PHRF 1 fleet; boats with ratings 166 or higher will be racing in the PHRF 2 fleet.
Printed handbooks will be made available before and at the Spring Sailors Meeting planned for April 17.
