| Message from the General Manager

So.....the 100year flood is happening again. All predictions say it will be as bad, if not worse than two years ago. The good news is that it will peak sooner and not remain around as long. The bad news is that if it does not float it will be underwater for a minimum of a month (this includes our gas dock, main patio, front entrance and surrounding areas around the Clubhouse).

Going through this in 2017 has given us a better idea as how to manage as well as mitigate many of the issues. Brad and his team have done and will continue to do a great job in building platforms for membership to have access to our facilities. "Bumpers" have been re-built for areas around the gas dock, crane launch and Clubhouse so vessels will remain safe. Our F&B Team will continue to do our best in serving our membership outside by re-creating fantastic spots to enjoy the outdoors. Rubber Boots can be found under the front entrance coat rack and are available to borrow.

Two things we are unable to control is how high the water gets and Membership usage of your facilities. As the weather gets warmer and the days and evenings get longer, we incourage everyone to "pitch in" and USE YOUR CLUB! We did experience a decline in business during the 2017 flood and we will do our very best to make your time at the Club as enjoyable as possible. We will continue to offer great food and fantastic service. We also will be reviewing additional Club expenses incurred due to the flooding by passing on this cost to the membership recognizing the importance to price our products as competitive as possible. We cannot stress the importance of seeing you at the Club, using the facility and actively engaging in bringing friends and family to experience what KYC has to offer.

| DRY Moorings

We are now welcoming DRY MOORINGS at the Club. As a reminder, please assist managment by adhering to the following:

1. Fill out a Dry Mooring Application (which can be found on the website - under the membership tab / or by visiting the main office to pick one up)
2. Application must be dropped off when you bring your vessel down to the Club
3. Please pick up a 2019 DRY MOORING Sticker and place it on the TRANSOM
4. Ensure managment is aware your boat is at the Club (you can make arrangements Mon-Fri to inform us that you will be bringing it)
5. Enjoy!

We have 14 boats currently at the Club with no application or 2019 sticker. They will be secured as so they are not stolen all in one area. Next time you are at the Club, please stop in, get a 2019 sticker, fill in a form and we will be more than happy to put your vessel in the proper location.

Our project is nearing completion! As paving will happen today, we ask that membership does not drive on the newly laid area during the weekend.

| 29er Sailing Program - Sam Harris

 

Brad, Ben and Shaggy took a trip down to Jemmitts yesterday to do some repairs and clean up on the Property! Brad reports the mooring balls and main dock wintered well, Shaggy complained the water was still a bit too cold. The grass will be cut by the weekend, and some firewood has been stacked. We are still working on getting our "outhouse" there for the weeked (no promises).
 

| Canada 2019 Blind Fleet Racing World Championship

Greetings from the Kingston Yacht Club!

KYC is pleased to announce that we are hosting the Blind Fleet Racing World Championships from September 1-8, 2019.

World Sailing has appointed KYC as the organizing authority, a rare opportunity for a truly international, world class regatta to be held in the home waters of Kingston’s harbour. Competitors from Europe, the United States, South America and New Zealand are expected - some 25 teams in all!

| KYC Cruisers

Once again John and Karen Kitney will be organizing events around the 12th annual Picton Jazz Festival Cruise (2019), scheduled for the weekend of August 16, 17 and 18.

We are planning to organize a group dinner for Friday night (August 16) and then plan to attend the 8:00 pm Regent Theatre Concert featuring June Bunnett and Maqueque (a 6-woman Cuban rhythm jazz phenom). A limited number of tickets have been pre-purchased for KYC ($42 each) and can be claimed by calling Greg at the club office to have these put on your club account. Additional tickets can also be purchased on-line at https://www.theregenttheatre.org (Select “What’s On” – “Events Calendar” – “Stage” and bear in mind that the good seats are selling quickly – additional on-line charges will apply).

Details for opting into the Friday dinner and any other weekend activities (such as the Saturday night performance of “Every Brilliant Thing” by the Festival Players) will follow as they become available. Dockage will also be arranged for the group. Please contact John Kitney if you are interested in participating in this weekend event, either by boat or by car. The club is looking for any members willing to open their doors to visiting sailors during our busy regatta season this summer. The dates of the regattas are:
9er Canadians: 2 - 4 August 2019
Youth Championships: 12 - 16 August 2019
CORK: 16 - 20 August 2019
4.7 World Championships: 16 -23 August 2019
 

| 29er Sailing Program - Sam Harris

As you may or may not know I’m fundraising to not only purchase a 29er, but also to bring the 29er sailing program back to KYC! I have found a boat to purchase from former 29er and KYC racer. Currently the fundraising is on go fund me https://www.gofundme.com/vwvy3-set-sam-asail, to reach our goal with this small timeline, we need help expanding to new fundraising markets, the KYC members! I think a big selling point is, we only need 225 more people to donate 20$ and we will have reached our goal of sailing a 29er and bringing an amazing program back to KYC. Thank you!

Keelboat racing has started! 13 hearty crews have hit the chilly waters in the first few races with good breezes thus far. Our new Sailing Manager Fraser Smith is providing race management services with our volunteer crews. Please introduce yourself, if you get the chance. Results have been posted on the bulletin board. Online results coming soon...

Pigeon Island, our 1st long distance of the season is on Saturday, May 25. See details in the Sailors Handbook.

Copies of the 2019 Sailors Handbook are available behind the bar, in the Race Office, and online.

There are still some Race Committee duty lottery slots available, mostly in July and August. Please sign up soon; you will assigned duty slots at the end of the month. The duty schedule is available online at "Sailing / Race Committee Duties". Email your requests for duty to the Race Office at race@kingstonyachtclub.com.

Last year, many racers found raceqs.com to be entertaining & instructive. It's a way to record your GPS race track during the race and then replay with the tracks from other competitors after the race. iPhone or Android apps are available to do the tracking and the website provides nice viewing, with a variety of visualisation options. It highlights what you and others did right (and sometimes wrong) out there on the race course. Try it out! The more boats that participate the better. We'll start showing the action on screen near the bar after racing...
