| September 3-10: Binnacle Island

It has been a terrific summer with lots of cruising events. Our final event is Binnacle Island. It is located just south of the bifurcation marker at the end of the Bateau Channel and Canadian North Channel. (44° 18.08’N 076° 11.37’W) At the water level expected for early September, boats with draft over 5’ should consider nearby anchorage. There is Aubrey Island to west and Mermaid to the south and Beau Rivage Island to the east. The island is booked from Saturday, September 3rd starting at noon to September 10th at noon. The organizing committee will be arriving on that day to set up. There will be a potluck on Sunday, September 4th on the island and if you wish to stay on the island during the week or visit for a few days please R.S.V.P. by September 1st. Looking forward to seeing you on Binnacle! I will send additional information to those who indicate they are coming.

| Beer of the Week

Hefeweizen:
A south German style of wheat beer (weissbier) made with a typical ratio of 50:50, or even higher, wheat. A yeast that produces a unique phenolic flavors of banana and cloves with an often dry and tart edge, some spiciness, bubblegum or notes of apples. Little hop bitterness, and a moderate level of alcohol. The "Hefe" prefix means "with yeast", hence the beers unfiltered and cloudy appearance.

| Wine of the Month

Gerard Bertrand 2013 Languedoc is a well balanced, dry, bright red wine produced from two fantastic grape varietals – Syrah and Grenache. These grapes alone commonly make for delicious wines because of the terroirs they thrive in. The Languedoc province throughout the South of France is one of the largest wine growing regions in the world. Soil in the region contains abundant limestone and gravel, along with an array of shrubbery that over many thousands of years has enriched the soil with fragrance. Because it’s so large, Languedoc provides a variety of terroirs that allow for unending combinations and concentrations of different varietals.

| Jazz Cruise was a Success!

Based on great feedback from all participants, the 2016 Jazz Cruise and Tour in the Picton area was a stellar success in spite of the lower numbers. It appears that the iconic “Hip” event in Kingston took its toll on the Saturday night Regent Theatre show based on the fact that two other weekend concerts were virtually sold-out. The show itself was fabulous, featuring pianist and composer Joe Sealy’s original jazz suite inspired by the renowned black community in Halifax. From our excellent theatre seating we were entertained by Joe and his co-host Jackie Richardson with powerful music, song and prose on the theme of “Africville Stories”.
The weekend began with a Friday night trip across the county to Rosehall Run where our first group of 13 participants received a personally pre-ordered “box” dinner from the specialty PICNIC TRUCK located on the winery grounds. Of course, a delightful glass of Rosehall wine was included, and the group enjoyed this light meal on the covered verandah overlooking the vineyards. The evening continued with a short walk across the parking lot to the open stage for an original production of “A Splinter in the Heart” by the Prince Edward County Festival Players. The play is a commissioned work based on the sole novel by Al Purdy, based on an historic war-time event in Trenton.
On Saturday evening the group, now grown to 17 participants, enjoyed a delightful dinner catered by chefs Nyk and Jack at Miss Lily’s Café and privately set as a BYOB event above the shop at Books & Company. This has become a long-time tradition and once again did not disappoint. After a very relaxing meal the group set off across Main Street to the evening show.
There is always a lot going on in Picton over the Jazz Festival weekend whether or not you are into the music. Picton’s Main Street remains one of the few Eastern Ontario small town destinations that has stayed alive and offers a wide variety of curious shops, cafes and restaurants to its many visitors.
