Women in a Wind would like to thank Christina Maclaclan for an amazing artistic evening. Under Christina's expert instruction and gentle guidance 15 women honed their inner artist skills. And while we may not be ready to give up our day jobs just yet, certainly another enjoyable activity can be added to our lives. Many thanks, Christina!

| April 19: The Princess Bridge: A Live Staged Reading

This beloved classic fairytale begins with a grandfather reading his favorite book "The Princess Bride" to his hard-to-impress grandson. This book, he promises, has everything - "Fencing. Fighting. Torture. Revenge. Giants. Monsters. Chases. Escapes. True love. Miracles." - and all that he promised comes to life before the boy’s enchanted eyes as his grandfather reads him the adventures of Buttercup, the most beautiful woman in the world, and Westley, the man she loves.

Tickets: $10 in advance / $12 at the door

Kingstown players are offering all Kingston Yacht Club members a 10% off discount for all shows ordered online. Tockets can be purchased at www.kingstonboxoffice.com/shop with the discount code YACHTCLUB

To all KYC members - Cruiser's Annual Dinner and Awards Night is Saturday, April 22.
We welcome and invite all members to join us!
Come at 6:00 for drinks downstairs, and then we'll head up stairs for 6:30.

This will be a great way to get together as we are heading into Launch Season. Be ready to test your boatie knowledge and share some stories about your adventures on the water. Cruiser's Awards will be presented. Chris Walmsley will share stories and show pictures from his recent sailing adventure in the Bahamas. This will be a perfect time to learn more about this summer's cruise that Gunner Heissler is planning for us and as always, Chef Neil and his staff will be presenting a wonderful meal! Cruising Fleet Awards nominations are requested to be sent to Peter at petere.fedora@gmail.com by this Sat, 15 April.

| May 3-4: Launch 2017

Launch day is May 3 starting at 0800
Masts up May 4, starts at 0900

We need as many hands on deck as we can get.
Please email rearcommodore@kingstonyachtclub.com and/or manager@kingstonyachtclub.com to save your spot!

Launch is easier than haul, masts up is trickier than masts down.
With a bit of luck we can put up a few masts on Wednesday.
Currently the plan is to do the yard first, then the breakwater, with as many masts as we can squeeze in.

Remember, volunteers get fed and “watered” both days.
Please come out and help your fellow members.

| Beer of the Week

Skeleton Park: Grätz 5:

A crisp, refreshing Grätzer style ale. This truly ancient ale dates back to the 15th century when the Persian Empire controlled parts of northern Europe. The style of beer almost completely disappeared when the last Grätzer brewery in Poland closed down in 1929. Earlier, a version of the style made its way to the Southern Ontario region and was popular in the early 1800’s when prohibition managed to snuff out its production in Ontario and hasn’t been seen again... until now.

Tasting notes:

Earthy and subtly smokey on the nose. Bright and vibrant. Notes of biscuits, vanilla and honey followed through with a slight hint of oak smokiness that finishes clean.

Enjoy!

| Wine of the Month

Get out your vegetable-tanned ponchos and hemp shopping bags, we’re going organic for the month (I thought it would be fitting as Earth Day is coming up (April 22)). Not because pesticides are bad for us. Rather, because I believe – and studies are showing that wine made from organically grown grapes is better tasting than it's given credit for, and it should be given credit. Does organic wine taste better? The scientific answer: Yes.

I wanted to introduce you to the Torres family who are arguably one of the most recognizable names in Spanish wine. Torres was founded in 1870 and is 100% family owned. They also have vineyards in Central Valley, Chile which is where this great Cabernet Sauvignon is located. Their vineyard is located between the Pacific and the Andres Mountains and comes from certified organic vineyards where viticulture methods respect the environment.

Las Mulas, Cabernet Sauvgnon

Deep ruby in colour; subtle aromas of raspberry and cassis, with notes of mint and spice; dry, with medium body, low acidity and fine-textured, supple tannins; flavours of cassis and raspberry, supported by vanilla, and savoury notes of spice and mint; fruit flavours linger on a lengthy finish.

Junior Sailing

| The Little Sailors that could use a little help from their friends

The race teams (Opti, 420’s and Lasers) are busy gearing up for the summer and getting team sponsors. A new initiative this summer includes the opportunity for members to ‘name’ a boat. For $500 you can have your name on the transom of one of the raceboats. We’ve seen this done at other clubs, and it’s great fun to see ‘Sally’ racing again ‘Brian’. The kids and members really get a kick out of it, and the race teams use the money to travel to regattas, pay guest coaches and get race team pinnies. If you are interested please let Lindsey Fair know at lindsey.fair@queensu.ca.
