Do you have precious, ancient or new KYC photos and/or stories that you think could contribute to filling out our history book? Please consider allowing us a look at them as we work toward 2021 125th Anniversary. At this particular point, if you have anything related to the Lightning fleet or the Hurricane JS fleet I would be grateful if you could let me know. We will treat them as the gold they are.

The early days in Kingston's Maritime History will be vividly portrayed in a slideshow that takes participants on a voyage beginning with Indigenous canoes and continues through the first sailing vessels on the Great Lakes. It explores the characters of the near-century-long French regime at Fort Frontenac, from Sieur de La Salle to René-Hippolyte La Force, Canada's first native-born naval flotilla commander. After the Seven Years' War the story shifts to the important British Revolutionary War fort and shipyard at Carleton Island (just south of Wolfe Island), and the tragic loss of the Provincial Marine warship Ontario, then finally returns to what became British Kingston, when Loyalist refugees settled here.

Kingston's Maritime Heritage Speaker Series 2018

Kingston Yacht Club and the Marine Museum of the Great Lakes are partnering with local experts to present members and the general public with a series of entertaining glimpses into the unique and impressive maritime heritage of our city and the region. In 2018 this will include five evening lectures at KYC:

Feb. 21: David More - Kingston's Maritime History Early Days: British Provincial Marine to Royal Dockyard (ca. 1785 to 1815)

March 7: Francis MacLachlan and friends - Kingston's Living Maritime Heritage: discussion of the living history of KYC and the value of square-rigger youth sail training on his brigantines, such as St. Lawrence II.

March: 21: Maurice Smith - Garden Island: local historian will talk about the enormous significance of D.D. Calvin and Garden Island to Kingston.

April 4: Maurice Smith - Kingston Shipyards: local historian will talk about the long and storied history of Kingston Shipyards, former home of the Museum.

Now that the festive season is over & the club is open again, your Sailing Committee is back to work. Some items of interest:

For club Racing, we are considering some changes to our events and sailing instructions (SIs). We will be surveying all the racers by email in the near future about their racing plans for 2018, to better guide us in our decision making. Work has begun on the 2018 Sailors Handbook. We hope to have the online version available by end of February and printed booklets ready for distribution at the Spring Sailors Evening in April.

For regattas, KYC will be hosting the 29er Skiffs Training Camp and Canadians Regatta (July 28 - Aug 6), EYC (July 12-14), Shark Worlds (Aug 26 - Sept 1), and IOM Eastern Canadians (Sept 8-9).

The Radio Controlled group is exploring the possibility of doing some winter racing (in heated indoor pools) using Dragon Force 65 radio controlled boats (boat cost < $300). RCYC has 60+ racers that do this on a regular basis.

In Cruising, we are still looking for 1 or 2 people to take the reins in this program. It would involve communicating with the cruisers about their needs, attending in a monthly Sailing Committee meeting during the off-season, and securing volunteers to organise the individual events (see last year's list in the "Sailing / Cruising" area on our web site). There is already a lot of content (event details & resources) that's been created for use in the Sailors handbook, etc. Extensive cruising experience is not required; just some modest time availability and a willingness to help.

Community Club is considering adding few dinghies (perhaps Lasers) to its fleet. The approach would be similar to what we currently have for the Sharks and Jessie (i.e. with respect to booking and sailor checkout). We are looking for members with used & no longer needed (but still in reasonable shape) boats they'd be willing to donate (or sell perhaps for a very modest fee).

KYC will also be hosting a variety of social events for regattas being run by CORK, including the Viper North Americans
