| June 16: KYC Sail to Amherst Island

KYC Sail to Amherst Island Saturday June 16 2018

N 44° 11.53´ W 076° 39.31´ Point “X” on chart below.

Judith and Robert Mackenzie invite the Cruisers and friends to their place on Amherst Island on Saturday June 16. This is a rain or shine event. Come by boat or by car. Plan to arrive about noon hour.

Bring your own lunch. We will offer wine, cold beer, glasses, plates and cutlery.

Getting There by Boat

Our place is on the north shore of Amherst Island located on the North Channel west of The Brothers Islands and east of Preston Cove which is located just east of Griffin Point. With reference to the chart below proceed west past The Brothers Islands to the point marked "X" on the chart. Stay off the Amherst Island shore by keeping the entire Lennox Generating Plant in sight until reaching Point “X”.

The coordinates of Point "X" are N 44° 11.53´ W 076° 39.31´.

Point “X” is sightly past (west) our yellow cottage with brown roofing. When the chimney on the brown roof lines up with a red marker near the shore proceed into the shore from Point “X”. Use the chimney and red marker as a range. Stay on the range!

There is no dock so anchor nearby in the area marked by a WHITE float. Bring your dinghy, if not someone will ferry you to shore. Best to wear water footwear for landing.

If you want assistance call 613 384-6861 and someone will be ready to “talk you in”.

Getting There by By Car

The Amherst Island ferry departs hourly from Millhaven on the half hour. Departures from the Island are on the hour. $9 return for a vehicle. Bicycles $1.50. People free. If travelling by car consider doubling up and save a fare.

On arrival on the island proceed straight ahead to the four-way stop intersection and turn left onto Front Road. Proceed through the hamlet of Stella and go eastward about 4 km. Our place is at 1150 Front Road.

Good luck! We look forward to seeing you.

| Beer of the Week

Dunkel

Bavarian-style Dark Lager 5.7% ABV

Dunkel is a Bavarian-style dark lager with a balanced, reserved hop presence. Crisp with a malt-forward taste, Dunkel is the ideal beer for those who love both the rich roastiness of a dark beer and the clean finish of a lager.

History & Style
Among the most appropriately named styles of beer, the term “dunkel” is the German word for “dark.” Dunkel’s history stretches back to the Bavarian Purity Act of 1516, which decreed that brewers use only barley, hops and water in beer-making – clearing a path for the dunkel, which met both these standards and satisfied the palates of the people of Munich. This traditional Bavarian lager rose in prominence, with a legacy that remains to this day. Dunkel is luscious and toasty in flavour, yet with smooth lager crispness.
Tasting Notes
Dunkel pours mahogany with a billowy white foam. The aroma offers mocha and bread crust notes. The flavour features deep malt impressions with hints of chocolate. This medium bodied dark lager has a clean finish.

Sailing

| Kingston Yacht Club Corinthian Fund

The activity at the club is increasing every day and soon the harbor will be full of the Junior Sailing Program and lots of Race Team members training for their major regattas around Canada and beyond . The Corinthian fund supports competitive sailors to help them defer the cost of travel to these events . We have supported many KYC Sailing Athletes who are striving to get on the Provincial Sailing Team , National Youth Teams , National Teams and also Canadian Olympic Teams . KYC has a tradition of giving as much support to their representatives as possible . We strive to “ Pay It Forward “ just as the many members have done before us . This week we received a donation in the memory of Bill and Edith Powles who were long time members in the sixties and seventies . Bill sailed a Flying Dutchman and is remembered as always having a smile ,time to talk to the junior sailors around the club and encouraging them to come out to all the races they could possibly manage .

The fund is accepting application for this season but they must be received in short order as the funds are limited and the committee must review the applications before the budget is completed . The applications and guidelines are on the KYC website .

If you have any questions please contact Gord Crothers at gordoncrothers@gmail.com or 613 -545-7050

| Sailpast

Commodore’s Sailpast 2018.

The weather cooperated – and just in time.

Thanks to all sailors who ventured out on Saturday afternoon to sail/motor past the Executive Committee of Kingston Yacht Club. We hope you had as much fun as we did, giving and receiving the “salutes”. With blustery east winds, it made for some deft maneuvering of boats, but, no sweat, KYC sailors can handle their boats in a pinch- no problem! We reviewed thirty seven boats ranging in length from eleven to forty two feet, crewed by as few as one or as many as eight. The boats were well dressed, ornamented, buff polished and looked great! A FINE looking fleet! “” The Executive Committee, on Rear Commodore Peter Cohrs’ “la Galouine”, reviewed and saluted the fleet (please note the barbershop quartet precision there!), took notes and hereby pronounce the following accolades:
“The Best Laundry Award”: “Sabbatical”, with Tim Irwin and Crew. A clothesline among clotheslines!
“The Over early Award”, to “Cat’s Whiskers” with Merv Daub and crew, and Phil Hart with crew in a KYC shark. Happily, these eager beavers DID do a return loop and passed once again, more or less in order.
“The Avoid Kibitka at all costs Award”: “Breakaway” with Paul Sentesy and crew, and “Ramble On” with Chris Walmsley and crew. Some very creative marine manoeuvring was witnessed to ensure that Kibitka remained on course and intact en route to the salute!
The “Pink Feline” Award: to Melodie Gummer whose twin pink panthers were strung from the rigging of her Shark.
“The Erroneous Dip Award”: to “Vandal”, skippered by Brandon Tattersall.
And the “Better Late Than Never Award”: goes to Tim and Kim Garrett and young-guns who scorched by la Galouine so fast they had to make a return pass to have their portraits taken...

Thanks to our Manager, Greg and our wonderful kitchen and serving staff for providing libations and food for the afternoon and evening. It looks like a good time was had by All! Your Executive Committee:, Commodore Ross Cameron, Vice Commodore Rob Crothers, Rear Commodore Peter Cohrs and Finance Director Ron Hodges thank all participants afloat and ashore for making Sailpast Day a success.
Cheers, Peter Cohrs, Rear Commodore.
