| Featured Beer

Good Time IPA

Session IPA 4% ABV

Good Time Session I.P.A. delivers fruity hop aromas and full flavour in an easy-to-enjoy light ale. Brewed with organic nelson sauvin and centennial hops, the recipe adds wheat and oats to barley malts for a satisfying and uncompromising craft beer experience.

History and Style

A session I.P.A. is a lower-alcohol expression of an India Pale Ale that highlights approachable hop aroma and flavour, without intense bitterness. The hop-derived citrus and tropical fruit notes lead into a fuller mouthfeel than might otherwise be expected from a light ale.

Tasting Notes

Good Time Session IPA pours gold with white foam. The aroma offers a combination of citrus, gooseberry, pineapple flavours and aromas. The flavour is juicy with subtle hop bitterness. The body is light and refreshing. The finish is clean and lingeringly hoppy.

Junior Sailing

| Surplus Flying Juniors Available to Members

The Flying Junior fleet served many years for the Junior Sailing and Queen Sailing Team programs. The boats are no longer serviceable for Learn to Sail purposes, but could be good project boat for a member who wants to take it to a smaller cottage lake.

Boats are offered to members at no cost, but a donation to the Boat Replacement Fund is recommended. We don't have equipment for a full fleet, so boats will be offered on a first come first serve basis. All boats will require some work to become operational, and may be missing smaller hardware.

Contact the Yard Steward yard@kingstonyachtclub.com for more details.

Sailing

| Blind Worlds

We are getting closer to the opening ceremonies for the Blind Fleet Sailing World Championship Regatta September 1-8, 2019 here at KYC! A full schedule of activities will be available next week so stay tuned. We are still looking for volunteers for both on the water and at the club positions for the week. If you are interested in participating as a volunteer, please let me know soon! There will be one more fundraising activity for the regatta - Music on the Pier - on August 10th. This event will feature live music and a silent auction on the breakwall – it’s going to be fun! We have a number of donated items for the auction but can always use more if you have something you would like to contribute. As well, if you would like to donate to the regatta directly, please click here. I hope to see you all out at the regatta and at our event in August!

| Graham Mutch Swimming Expedition

After selling Cockleshell last season, Graham Mutch was looking for a replacement water activity and decided to swim from Kingston Yacht Club to Brockville. The expedition took place over 20 days between June 23 and July 24.

Graham towed a float which incorporated safety gear including daytime strobe lights and a diver down flag. The float was one metre long with a waterproof hatch and just enough room for camping gear and supplies. Most days Fran dropped Graham off and picked him up after a three to five kilometre swim or a portage when he couldn’t access the water.

On the leg from KYC to CFBKYC fellow KYC member Joel Parlow paddled shotgun in his kayak. The expedition comprised 57 km of swimming, 29 km of portages, and one night camping on Mulcaster Island. A nice triathlon.

| Ramble on and Finnish

The Cape Breton KYC Cruisers’ Party

Ramble On and Finnish Line 2.0 are now gunk holing along the south coast of Nova Scotia on their way to Halifax. Now at 1550 nm out which is 56% of the distance and halfway time-wise. They stayed in many fishing ports from GaspĂ© to New Brunswick but now marinas, yacht clubs and anchorages are the norm. Spent a week on PEI where Tarja and Chris’ son, Andrew, joined them. Andrew flew home from Charlottetown and the two boats sailed on to spend a week in the Bras d’Or Lakes on Cape Breton Island where Chris’ son, Ben, joined the group. This segment was a bit of a reunion with KYC members, past and present. Ze and Peter were in Nova Scotia for a wedding but took 3 days to drive them around Cape Breton and the Cabot Trail. This is where Ze grew up so they had a very personal tour indeed. At Ben Eoin YC they had dinner with Sue Reid and Tom Moynihan (former KYCers now living in Moncton) and Rick and Laura who were on a Maritime camping trip. The following day they and Rick and Laura visited the fortress at Louisbourg—an amazing place to see how folks lived in 1746. Ben enlisted in the fortress’ artillery regiment and got to fire a cannon. Doesn’t get more authenticate than that!

| Setting the Mark

Setting the Mark is the title of the KYC history book which will be published as part of our 125 th Anniversary celebrations. The Editorial Board would be grateful for any and all suggestions about who, what and when should be included and for any and all illustrations and photos that members may wish to see included. Contact Dave More, dmore1@cogeco.ca

| ALTS Graduates

Adult Learn to Sail graduates Tammy and Andrew completed their Start Keelboat Sailing Course on Community Club Shark 'Leprechaun' in gusty winds last Sunday and received their Sail Canada logbooks at Confederation Basin. The course included ashore topics and afloat skills. For dates of upcoming courses, please visit the Sailing School, Adult Sailing page of our KYC website.

Note to racers: Effective for the whole season (and going forward), there is a change in scoring for OCS (on course side) or early start: number of competitors in a race plus 1 instead of number of competitors in the series plus 1. Until now, we had been using the approach taken for regattas instead of the approach recommended for longer (e.g. club) series. Completed series have been re-scored. There has been no impact on the overall order of finish in any of this year's completed series.
