Night Märzen

Amber Lager 5.5%

Night Märzen is Beau’s certified organic amber lager. A mild toasted malt sweetness is kept perfectly in check by two varieties of European hops. With its snappy finish, this any-occasion lager is great alongside anything roasted or grilled.

History and Style

Beau’s has been brewing this multi-award-winning Märzen recipe every fall for more than a decade. Märzen is a traditional German lager style that takes its name from the month of March when it was historically brewed. The beer would then be lagered in cellars through the summer, and then released in the fall.

Tasting Notes

Märzen pours a clear copper-amber with a white foam. It has warm bread aromas, a biscuity malt flavour, and a firm hop presence that lends balancing bitterness. An ultra- clean lager finish completes the package in this highly drinkable beer.

| IOM Regatta

his past weekend saw the International One Meter Eastern Region Championships off the outer breakwater at Kingston Yacht Club. We had 14 entries from all over North America.

Saturday morning brought with it winds up to 30 knots and five to six foot seas, seven brave souls went out and risked their boats and they had an absolute blast. There is nowhere else that these out of town IOM sailors get the opportunity to sail in these conditions and have the facility's that we offer at KYC. I have been sailing these boats for many years and I have never witnessed such fantastic sailing, the boats were going so fast downwind it was difficult to maintain control but they all managed to sail safely with very few breakdowns.

Sunday was a different story with nice flat water and a ten knot breeze which tempted all the sailors out on to the race course. All the boats had their big A rigs on and once again they showed us some beautiful boat handling, there was a little bit of dodging and weaving at the weather mark but everyone was sailing well and we had no confrontations.

Once again our KYC staff showed off their stuff and looked after all of us very professionally.

KYC has some of the best volunteers on the lake and they were on show again this weekend. We had Tim Garrett and his son manning the mark boat which wasn't easy in five foot seas, Mary Wilson and I assisted with the scoring. Lana Van Rossem did a great job as our chief scorer, and Peter Van Rossem did his magic controlling the fleet as Race Director. Last but not least many thanks to Paul Switzer who worked tirelessly for the past year making sure this event happened. It turned out to be a fantastic weekend and everyone should be congratulated for pulling it off under some very trying conditions.

| Ramble On and Finnish

After 123 days and 2,570 Ramble On and Finnish Line 2.0 have made New York City. The voyage down the New England coast had many memorable moments and stops. There were beautiful anchorages in small coves and towns and stops at historic places like Portsmouth NH, Gloucester MA and Marblehead MA with its enormous mooring field. In Boston we spent several days enjoying the old neighbourhoods and historic sites like Bunker Hill and the USS Constitution. On our final day Commodore Peter Cohrs and Wilma arrived for the segment to NYC.

After passing through the Cape Cod Canal we spent several days on Martha’s Vineyard. Then it was on to Mystic CT and its wonderful seaport museum—Upper Canada Village meets ships. Like UC Village it’s very much a working village with old ship restorations and the various trades of cooper, blacksmith, etc. There is a newly restored 1841 whaler there that was taken out for a sail a few years ago 90 years after its last sail! One needs more than a single day to see everything.

After Mystic was a marvellous sail down Long Island Sound stopping at Mattituck, Port Jefferson and Oyster Bay. The voyage into New York was down the East River which in the middle has the potentially torrential Hell’s Gate. From the tide/current tables we got the timing right and enjoyed the 3 to 4 knot speed increase. Also enjoyed the views as we passed the prisons of Rikers Island, the UN Building, the Brooklyn Bridge, Battery Park and, of course, the Statue of Liberty.

Our homeward journey now begins up the Hudson through the Erie Canal and home. Look for us the week of October 7th.

Our last weekend event is the Chase Race & Able Sail Fundraiser on tomorrow (Sat Sep 28). This pursuit type distance race is often a great way to end the racing season. Boats give up their handicap at the the beginning of the race and everybody (more or less) ends up at on the patio around the same time. There will be an (optional) fundraising component to the event. Details to follow and be implemented at the Skippers Meeting at 0930 and after the finish. First signal is at 1030. Start times for boats are listed in our online Sailors Handbook and printouts on the bulletin board.

The last 2 races of the September series are on Oct 1 and 3. NOTE: First signal for the races will be at 1745 instead of 1800. We're hoping for nice long sunsets to give us time to run good races!

Awards Night is Saturday Nov 16 this year. This is always a great way to end the year, recognising winners in our evening & weekend racing series, as well as sailors meriting special awards, and enjoying great food & beverage with our crews & competitors. We have a very special guest speaker lined up!
