Covid-19

The KFL&A has entered stage 3 of the reopening plan for Ontario. We currently have just two unresolved cases. This brings many new opportunities for KYC. It also means we must all stay vigilant in keeping our distance, and wearing face coverings indoors and when that distance requirement is compromised.

In accordance with KFL&A public health directives, the dining rooms of the clubhouse will be permitted to open next week with face covering requirements in place (unless you are seated and actively eating or drinking). The inner bar area will remain closed as all members must be seated at tables and not mingling. This area will also serve as our decontamination area to ensure that all menus and common items are cleaned after every use.

Membership Fees

Invoices have been sent out. We thank you for responding as quickly as you can to help your Club get through this very challenging fiscal year.

Patridge Room Catered Events

KYC will also be opening up the Patridge Room for banquets and seated activities of up to 50 people. Please contact Brandon if you would like to host a small catered gathering in this spectacular space.

Monday Night Dinghy Sailing

It all began for me in the 90s at a small sailing club on Cherry Beach in Toronto learning to sail and race an Albacore. And then I found a Hobie. Yes! Dinghy sailing at KYC is the gateway into the wonderful world of sailing and one day joining our beautiful yacht club! And this past week, my daughter climbed aboard a Pico with a member family for her first experience - our next member in the making!

Please come and join other KYC members and coaches on Monday nights at 6pm with or without a boat and your kids or grandkids or just come and watch our KYC families launching our collective fleet of 420s, Lasers, Picos, a Flying Dutchman, and a Hobie. A small regatta may even be in the works!

Easter Seals

Join us on Saturday, July 25th for our first ever Easter Seals Harbour Pageant! Whether you have a sailboat, motored boat, paddled or row boat, you can take part in our three courses starting at Kingston Yacht Club. Get ready, Easter Seals wants to see how you dress your boat! We will be giving away prizes, including best-dressed boat, and the first 21 registrants will get a head start by receiving an Easter Seals Flag to fly through the courses. Every participant will also receive a sausage-on-a-bun lunch donated by KYC and our sponsor Findlay Foods.

KYC Apparel

I have received some great suggestions from members and in response, orders have been placed for visors and garden hats. These items will be in soon! There is also a small clearance sale to wrap up last year's stock. If there is something you would like to see ordered, please send me an email. So far member suggestions have included sunglasses, leggings, a quarter-zip top, scarves, cool weather jackets and touques! This is going to be great!

Race Training

Under the direction of our Program Manager and Head Coach Rachel Harris, Approximately 12 race team athletes will be hitting the water for the rest of the summer to 'keep the rust off' and excel their skills under the guidance of our talented coaching team. Can't wait to see them out there! Please support and cheer on our made-in-KYC future champions.

Junior Sailing and Adult Learn To Sail

Following the guidelines of Ontario Sailing and the Ontario Ministry of Health, an instructional sailing program will be launched very soon for adults and semi-experienced youth sailors. We are currently building the shortened season program with an anticipated start date of August 1st. More information will be made available this week on our webpage and social media sites.

| Moorings Billed

Please note that the office has billed wet moorings and boat sheds. This process has been dealyed significantly from the uncertainty with COVID. Please note, as in pervious years, the mooring bills have been dated at the date immediately after launch (June 1st). The June statements will be sent by email later today. Billings are not due for payment until July 31st.

| KYC Turns 125!

Next year, 2021, our Club celebrates its 125 th birthday. We’re getting people who are interested in helping plan, organize and making it happen. If you’d like to be involved, at any level, please send your name to Ross Cameron (ross.cameron@kingstonyachtclub.ca), who will chair the organizing committee. There’s lots to do and it’s not all committee work so if you’re interested in being involved at any level send your name to Ross as soon as you can. Thanks!

| Sailing Update – July 17, 2020

July has been an active month for sailing at KYC. The Tuesday and Saturday Sailing Events have been well attended with 11 PHRF boats and 6 Sharks participating. This past Tuesday in particular was a fantastic evening for sailing. A nice 14 – 16 knot breeze and 26 degree temperatures made for some champagne COVID conditions.

With the KYC Cruising events cancelled it has been great to see a number of our cruising fleet out participating in these events. As a matter of fact, Chris Walmsley in Ramble On sits atop the corrected PHRF times in our unofficial non sailing, sailing events. In the Shark fleet, the Fair family (James and Matt) sits atop the fleet with straight non-bullet… bullets. A huge thank you to Ross Cameron and Ken Martin who have worked tirelessly on the Special Sailing Instructions for the first part of the season. Ross is likely in a position to publish a book, How to Run Sailing Events in a Pandemic. Looking ahead there is lots of sailing to be done.
Ø This Saturday July 18 is the Partridge Bowl chase sail to Jemmett’s Landing. If you are sailing please make sure to send an email to Daniel – manager@kingstonyachtclub.com.
Ø Next week we will expand our weeknight events to include Thursday evenings as well. For the remainder of July our weeknight events will be sailed under the Special Sailing Instructions that have been in place. At the skippers discretion spinnakers will be allowed. If you use your spinnakers you need to inform the Race Office (race@kingstonyachtclub.com) so your PHRF rating can be adjusted accordingly.
Ø Saturday July 25 KYC is hosting the first ever Easter Seals Harbour Pageant. Check the signs around the club or Facebook for details.
Ø Saturday August 1 we will sail our last Saturday under the Special Sailing Instructions. For this event there will be a skippers meeting at 1030hrs.

With the release of the province into Stage 3 and following communication from Ontario Sailing, our intent is to begin regular weeknight racing on Tuesday August 4. This would commence an August series sailed under our regular KYC Sailing Instructions. Full crews can be used on the condition that they are part of your bubble or masks / buffs are worn. On Saturday August 22 the Wolfe Island Race will be replaced with the traditional KYC Harbour Race. While it appears that all this will be possible under current guidelines, the Sailing Sub-Committee will continue to monitor the communication from Ontario Sailing Association and work with our GM to ensure complete compliance with all current COVID-19 protocols and procedures. A huge thank you to Erika Vines and our JS Instructor team for organizing the Monday evening dinghy sailing events. The response has been excellent with Lasers, Opti’s and 420s heading out on the water. The fun starts at 6pm. To register or for more information please email Erika at erika@powick.ca.
